In Australia, ranches are known as stations, cowboys are known as stockmen and ringers, (jackaroos and jillaroos who also do stockwork are trainee overseers and property managers). Many “bush” kids—those born in the Outback of Australia, learned to ride before they could even walk, and many of these children went on to become Drovers - those who “drove” cattle to the shipping yards. The economy of the inland area of northern Australia was stimulated by the availability of cheap pasture where cattle could be grazed. The only way to shift cattle from the Australian stations was to drive them to the nearest rail head—which could be as much as a thousand miles away.
